JCI Hi-Line Jaycees Haunted House

Community-run haunted houses provide immersive, project-based environments where young people build leadership skills, foster community connection, and raise funds for local non-profits. Through collaborative event planning, youth transition from observers to active change-makers, developing tangible skills while giving back. The structure of a haunted attraction cultivates positive change and development in several concrete ways: Leadership & Event Management: Organizing a large-scale event teaches teens and young adults real-world project management. They oversee budgeting, scheduling, marketing, and safety protocols, equipping them with career-ready skills. Community Fundraising: Many charity haunts donate tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charities and civic groups. By participating, young people learn how to effectively channel volunteer hours into tangible community support. Creative Arts: Designing sets, special effects makeup, and costuming, allows youth to engage in hands-on in the performing arts. Soft Skills & Empathy: Acting and guiding groups requires deep emotional intelligence, rapid problem-solving, and crowd management. Youth learn to read crowds and adjust their intensity, promoting positive communication. Recreational Fear: Creating a safe, controlled environment where guests can experience "recreational fear" allows youth to facilitate community-building. Studies show that shared scary experiences enhance social bonding and empathy.
